It is reported that an IAF team has recently visited Russia to examine a batch of 21 MiG-29s originally built for the Soviet Air Force and since in storage at a Russian air base over the past three decades. According to an IAF officer, these were found in “excellent condition and could well supplement the current MiG-29 fleet of the IAF”. The IAF present inventory of 69 MiG-29s are being upgraded and will have multirole capabilities as also increased internal fuel capacity. If the additional 21 MiG-29s are procured, reportedly at a price of Rs. 285 crore per aircraft, these too would be subsequently upgraded to the UPG standard.
